Tile and flooring are unforgiving in a way most finishes are not. There is no touch-up and no second coat: a pattern that creeps out of square over a run, or a floor laid over a subfloor that moves, has to come up to be fixed. Done right, you stop noticing it.
Most floors tell you when they are ready: cracked or loose tile, grout that has crumbled away, boards that cup, squeak or have worn through their finish, or materials that never quite met cleanly at the doorways. In older Central New York homes it is often several at once.
What separates a good floor from a bad one is what happens before installation: a flat, sound substrate, hardwood acclimatized to the house, and a set-out planned so cuts land at the least visible edge. We do it within our kitchens and baths, or on its own, from one room to a whole floor.
