When a Room Needs Finishing, Get It Done Properly

Finish work is where a room is judged. Nobody inspects the framing, but everybody notices a mitre that has opened up, a casing that sits proud of the wall, or a paint line that wanders where the trim meets the ceiling. None of it is hard to avoid; it takes preparation nobody sees.

Most rooms tell you when they are ready: gaps at the baseboard, casing that does not sit flat, a patch that still shows through the paint, cracked plaster, or doors that no longer latch. In older Central New York homes, many with plaster walls, it is often several at once.

What separates good finish work from bad is everything done before the last coat: surfaces made flat rather than filled over, trim scribed to walls that are not straight, and corners cut to the angle the room actually has. We do it to close out our own remodels, or on its own.
